ULYSSE COLLIN

Offered JUL 25th, 2017

“One of the newest stars in the Champagne firmament is Olivier Collin, in the village of Congy in the Coteaux du Morin, the area that lies between the Côte des Blancs and the Sézanne. An inquisitive winegrower, Collin gives credit to Anselme Selosse for inspiring him to become a Champenois vigneron. He describes his stage with Selosse in 2001 as “one of those encounters that changes your life,” and it prompted him to take back a portion of his family’s vines that had been rented to Pommery, allowing him to make his own wines.

Winemaking as a rule here is as natural and non-interventionist as possible…Olivier Collin is a relentless explorer, striving constantly to improve his methods and his wines…since 2007, his wines have demonstrated an increased finesse and complexity: at their best, they exhibit a deeply vinous presence and a firmly pronounced chalkiness, emphasizing the expression of terroir over fruit flavor.” – Peter Liem, Champagne Guide

“[Olivier] Collin crafts beguiling, totally fascinating Champagnes…some of the most unique and thrilling wines being made in Champagne. There is little question Collin’s wines are now on the same level as those of his mentor, Anselme Selosse.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Ulysse Collin Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Maillons NV
18 bottles available
$110 per bottle

95 points Vinous: “The most refined of these new releases, the NV Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Maillons wrap around the palate with endless layers of sensual fruit. Sweet red berries, flowers and subtle spices waft from the glass, but the Maillons is all about weightless, crystalline purity, tension and grace. From a purely textural standpoint, the Maillons stands apart for the finesse of its mousse and its exceptional overall harmony. Readers who can find the Maillons should not hesitate, it is insanely beautiful.”

Ulysse Collin Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Pierrieres NV
18 bottles available
$110 per bottle

94 points Vinous: “The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Perrieres tastes like white Burgundy with bubbles. A compelling array of slate, gunflint, crushed rocks, white flowers and apricots bursts from the glass in this crystalline, beautifully delineated Champagne. Rich, deep and textured, yet also tightly wound, the 2008 captures the essence of the vintage. The wine gets better and better with time in the glass, with endless layers of fruit that build to a huge crescendo on the finish. The Perrieres is one of the most full-bodied wines I have tasted from Collin. As beautiful as this is, the Perrieres just keeps getting better and better in the glass. Shallow soils composed of clay and silex yield wines of considerable energy.”
