HUDELOT-NOELLAT

The Hudelot family ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle Musigny since before the French Revolution. Founded in 1964 by Alain Hudelot, the domaine grew in 1978 with the addition of vines owned by his wife Odile Noellat (granddaughter of Charles Noellat). In 1988, the Noellat estate was divided into three: Lalou Bize-Leroy acquired half, with the remaining half being shared by Charles, Odile and Jean-Jacques Confuron.

Upon retirement in 2007, Alain was succeeded at the winery by grandson Charles van Canneyt, who completed his formal studies in Dijon. By decreasing yields in the vineyard, and being very selective at harvest – applying meticulous wine-growing techniques that respect the terroirs – Charles has continued to elevate the prestige of the domaine.

The estate consists of almost ten hectares of very prestigious vineyards, including some of the best in Burgundy. Their parcels of Richebourg and Romanee St. Vivant lie alongside those owned by Romanee Conti and Leroy. The Clos Vougeot comes from old vines in the northernmost section of the vineyard. The quality of this wine improved significantly after Alain sold his lower parcel which was located at the bottom slope of the vineyard, thus reducing its total production by 40% but remaining only with the two parcels that neighbor Domaine Leroy’s.

92+ points View From the Cellar: “Suchots can also often be quite black fruity in personality, but this is not the case with the 2011 Hudelot version, which offers up a fine bouquet of cherries, blood orange, Vosne spice, fresh herb tones, fine soil nuances and a bit of cedary wood. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and shows off lovely mid-palate depth, with ripe tannins, bright acids and excellent grip and focus on the long and dancing finish. A very elegant and intensely flavored Suchots.”

93+ points View From the Cellar: “I really love the 2012 Suchots from Domaine Hudelot, as the overtly red fruity character of this wine this year is very rare for this terroir and earmarks a very special vintage of the wine. The gorgeous nose offers up scents of cherries, raspberries, a touch of blood orange, Vosne spices, a beautiful base of minerality, woodsmoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very transparent, with a sappy core of fruit, fine-grained tannins and a very, very long, soil-driven and tangy finish. Superb juice.”

92+ points View From the Cellar: “The 2013 Suchots chez Hudelot is utterly classic and another ringing success for the vintage. The black fruity bouquet jumps from the glass in a blend of dark berries, black cherries, gamebirds, espresso, dark soil tones, fresh herbs and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very soil-driven in personality, with an excellent core, suave tannins and a long, tangy and beautifully balanced finish. High class juice.”

94 points View From the Cellar: “The 2010 Clos Vougeot from Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is absolutely classic, offering up a deep and very focused aromatic mélange of black cherries, red plums, a nice touch of blood orange, very complex soil tones, game, vinesmoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and primary, with its full-bodied format nicely reserved on the attack. The core is deep and sappy, with great soil inflection, ripe tannins and outstanding length and grip on the focused and very refined finish. This will be a great bottle of Clos Vougeot in the fullness of time.”

95+ points View From the Cellar: “I have a fair bit of Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot in my personal cellar, as I rank this as one of the three or four best examples produced in the Clos year in and year out, but none of the lovely wines I have in my cellar is in the same league with this brilliant 2012 version! The bouquet is both deeper and sappier than any of the premier crus, offering up a beautiful blend of red plums, red and black cherries, gamebirds, cocoa, a touch of nutskin, a marvelously complex base of soil tones, woodsmoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and flawlessly cut, with a stunning core, great soil signature, suave tannins and magical length and grip on the seamless and youthful finish. A great, great wine.”

94+ points View From the Cellar: “I have always loved the domaine’s Clos Vougeot, and I had a chance on this visit to see where their parcels are located, and it is quite clear that they have a couple of beautifully-situated plots of vines to work with in this vineyard. Both parcels are up at the top of the slope by the château, with the plot that originated from the Noëllat family running from the upper wall right down along the side of the château on its southern side, and the same-size parcel that originally came from the Hudelot family contiguous and right below it, with the Méo-Camuzet parcel lying alongside it on the slope. Prime real estate! The 2013 finished up its malo quite late as well and still had a bit of CO2 on the backend, but this is clearly a star of the vintage, as it wafts from the glass in a superb blend of cherries, red plums, raw cocoa, a touch of nutskin, woodsmoke, fresh herbs, roses and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, very transparent and rock solid at the core, with ripe tannins, bright acids and superb length and grip on the focused and youthful finish. A great Clos Vougeot in the making.”

96 points View From the Cellar: “I have always been a very big fan of the Romanée-St.-Vivant from Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat, but now that the new wood here has been reduced to fifty percent, the expression of the underlying, magical terroir of this great grand cru has really jumped to the fore. I wish other owners of RSV could take their cue from this domaine, as it seems to me if there was ever a terroir in Vosne-Romanée that begged for smaller percentages of new wood, it is RSV. The 2011 version from Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is stunning, offering up a beautiful nose of sappy raspberries and cherries, Vosne spice tones, a touch of woodsmoke, great minerality, cedar and a pungent topnote of roses. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, strikingly pure and rock solid at the core, with a lovely sappiness and transparency, ripe tannins and a very long, tangy and still quite primary finish. This will be a great, great wine in the fullness of time.”

97 points View From the Cellar: “The 2012 Romanée-St.-Vivant from Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is glorious example of both this great terroir and this historic vintage. The very pure and very sappy nose soars from the glass in a mélange of red and black raspberries, cherries, roses, fresh nutmeg, orange zest, Vosne spices, a very, very complex base of soil tones, duck and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with a greater sense of reserve (or is that resolve?) than the Clos Vougeot, very elegant tannins, tangy acids and laser-like focus on the perfectly balanced, elegant and endless finish. Glorious juice!”

(95-97) points View From the Cellar: “The 2013 Romanée-St.-Vivant from Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat was another late malo finisher and the wine was still on the grumpy side at the time of my visit, with a fairly expressive nose currently coupled to an out of sorts palate impression, but this will clearly be outstanding. The bouquet offers up a fabulous constellation of raspberries, cherries, blood orange, beautiful spice tones, lavender, complex soil nuances, fresh nutmeg and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and quite poised (despite its grumpy nature at the time of my visit), with fine mid-palate depth, nascently complexity, ripe tannins and superb length and grip on the tangy finish. This is going to be very, very special when it reaches its zenith.”

96 points View From the Cellar: “The 2011 Richebourg from Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is another absolutely stellar example of the vintage, and this wine too has really benefited to my palate from the diminution of its new wood percentage. The reserved and very classy nose wafts from the glass in a blend of red plums, cherries, gamebirds, a touch of nutskin, a beautiful base of soil, citrus zest and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and again, very pure, with a superb core, ripe, suave tannins, very fine acidity and excellent focus and grip on the soil-driven, very long and perfectly balanced finish. A young Richebourg fully worthy of the exalted reputation of this cru.”

97+ points View From the Cellar: “Whereas the RSV was hunkered down on the palate and waiting for its racking, the 2013 Hudelot Richebourg was absolutely singing at the time of my visit. This is going to be a great, great vintage for this wine, as it soars from the glass in an extremely pure mix of red plums, cherries, raspberries, cocoa, gamebirds, a marvelously complex base of soil, woodsmoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and utterly refined, with a rock solid core, great focus and grip, fine-grained tannins and a very, very long, elegant and tangy finish. A beautiful Richebourg in the making.”
