FOURRIER

Domaine Fourrier has a long history in Gevrey Chambertin, extending over four generations. First founded by Fernand Pernot in the 1930s, the domaine was passed on to his nephew Jean-Claude Fourrier in 1969. In 1992, his son Jean-Marie took over the family’s ten hectare estate at the age of 23 years old. Jean-Marie burst onto the Burgundy scene by combining the traditions of his father and great uncle. His experience gained while working as an intern for Henri Jayer has helped to develop his own clear sense of style – ever since his ascension, the wines of Domaine Fourrier have garnered critical acclaim. Jean-Marie’s winemaking philosophy follows Jayer’s practices – great wines begin in the vineyard, and he is fastidious about maintaining healthy, well nurtured vines, and by following strict, extremely natural wine making techniques.

The domaine’s portfolio includes holdings in few of Gevrey Chambertin’s top premier crus, where the impeccably tended vineyards are composed of vines of an average age between 50 and 70 years-old. His most famous holdings are the ones in grand cru Griotte Chambertin (0.25 hectare) and the very best premier cru Clos St. Jacques (0.89 hectare), with vines that were planted between 1902 and 1910.

The entire portfolio shares similar characteristics: wonderful purity, transparency of terroir, bright vibrant fruit, minimal use of sulfites and limited use of new oak (typically 20%). The wines possess superb balance, elegance, finesse and complexity.

92+ points View From the Cellar: “I have never tasted a more refined and complete example of young Combes aux Moines than the 2002 Fourrier. Here is a wine where the elegance and purity that are the hallmarks of the vintage have worked magic on this sometimes rather aggressively sauvage terroir. The bouquet is pure, deep and soars from the glass in a blaze of pure black cherry fruit, a bit of fraises de bois, dark chocolate, incipient notes of the grilled meats to come, violets, fine minerality and a touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and laser-like in its focus, with fine tannins, sound acids, and a very long, complex and palate-staining finish. This is a terrific vintage for this wine.”

(93-94) points View From the Cellar: “The Combes aux Moines has really stood out in quality that last few vintages chez Fourrier, and the 2006 will be a beautiful follow-up to the magnificent 2005. The bouquet is showing the faintest hints of reduction at the present time, but underneath offers up stunning transparency and urgency in its mix of black cherries, dark chocolate, grilled meat, great minerality and woodsmoke. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and sappy, with lovely raciness and focus, excellent mid-palate depth, and a long, ripely tannins and very complex finish. Superb juice that may eventually nose out the Champeaux.”

(92-93+) points View From the Cellar: “The 2008 Combes aux Moines was only eighty percent through its malo, but its quality was self-evident. The nose offers up a beautiful mélange of blood orange, red cherries, grilled meat, a lovely base of Gevrey’s black minerality, woodsmoke and a touch of bitter chocolate. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and very transparent, with moderate tannins and lovely length and grip on the perfectly balanced finish. Lovely juice in the making.”

93 points Vinous: “Deep red. Explosively perfumed nose displays energetic raspberry and wild strawberry complemented by dried rose and iron. Expansive red berry flavors boast excellent depth and striking purity, with fine, dusty tannins adding support. This became sweeter with air, picking up a note of kirsch and finishing lush and creamy, with outstanding length.”

96 points Vinous: “The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques engages all of the senses with its cool, mineral-laced fruit and expressive bouquet. This shows marvelous tension and energy, not to mention fabulous overall balance. It could not be more different in style than the 2009 tasted alongside it. Both are fabulous, though. The 2008 is one of the more backward wines of the vintage and will require considerable patience.”

94 points Vinous: “Good bright medium red. Wild, musky aromas of strawberry, raspberry, minerals and game; quite explosive on the nose. Sweet, fat and savory, with the musky quality carrying through on the palate. Not particularly high-pitched or floral but offers terrific intensity of red berry and soil flavors. Fourrier believes that following three vintages with lower levels of phenolic maturity, many growers over extracted in 2009. Incidentally, he’s now confident about his labor-intensive system for sealing his bottles with wax and believes that a wine like this Clos Saint-Jacques should have no trouble aging for 20 years.”

Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques 2011
Pack Size: OCB (12)
12 bottles available
$350 per bottle

95 points View From the Cellar: “Last year’s commemorative bottling of the one hundred year-old vines in the Fourrier section of Clos St. Jacques is now a thing of the past, and there is once again only a single cuvée of Clos St. Jacques in the cellars in 2011. Oh, but what a wine! The deep, transparent and magical nose wafts from the glass in a very sappy blend of red and black cherries, cocoa, grilled meats, black minerality, woodsmoke, fresh thyme and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a great core, a properly reserved structure, exceptional focus and a very long, chewy and still quite primary finish. This is going to be an absolutely brilliant wine at its apogee.”

Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques 2013

(93-96) points Vinous: “Dark, bright red. Deep aromas of raspberry, smoke and rose petal. Silky, sweet and utterly seamless; perfectly harmonious from the start (“very Zen,” says Fourrier). Wonderfully perfumed raspberry and floral flavors carry through the rising, palate-saturating finish, which features outstanding crushed-stone lift. This is 2010-like in its balance of fruit intensity and piquant minerality. Fourrier told me he was the first to pick among the five owners of Clos Saint-Jacques in 2013, bringing in his fruit on October.”

Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin Cherbaudes 2007
Pack Size: OCB (12)
12 bottles available
$170 per bottle

92 points Vinous: “Good medium red. Red raspberry, smoky minerality and a whiff of crushed rocks on the inviting nose. Dense, ripe and impressively rich, with the rocky quality carrying through in the mouth and leavening the wine’s impression of glyceral sweetness. Wonderfully round, broad wine with a very long, ripely tannic, building finish.”

Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin Cherbaudes 2010
Pack Size: OCB (12)
12 bottles available
$195 per bottle

92 points View From the Cellar: “As I have said in other vintages, Cherbaudes is one of the premier crus in Gevrey that can start out life a bit sauvage in style and often will need a bit of bottle age to show its inherent elegance. However, this is emphatically not the case with this sleek and classy 2010, which offers up a superb and very refined nose of cherries, strawberries, a touch of beetroot, fresh herb tones, coffee and a lovely base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and nicely reserved, with excellent mid-palate depth, fine-grained tannins, lovely focus and grip and a very long, bouncy and still quite primary finish. This will not be a blockbuster at its apogee, but rather a very intensely flavored, complex and extremely stylish Gevrey premier cru.”

Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin Cherbaudes 2011
6 bottles available
$135 per bottle

92 points View From the Cellar: “The Cherbaudes chez Fourrier is often one of the least elegant Gevrey premier crus out of the blocks, as this terroir often shows a bit of youthful herbacité that perhaps shows off its proximity to Mazis-Chambertin. These are not young vines, as Jean-Marie’s grandfather replanted this parcel in 1940. The 2011 is quite classic in its aromatic profile, offering up a complex bouquet of cherries, mustard seed, incipient notes of game, a lovely base of soil, vinesmoke, a touch of cedar and a topnote of cherry skin. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and soil-driven, with fine mid-palate depth, chewy tannins and a long, youthful and focused finish. This will need eight years or so in bottle to really start to blossom, but it will be a lovely wine.”
