de MONTILLE

One of the great domaines of Burgundy, the de Montille family winemaking heritage can be traced back to the 17th century in Volnay. Taking up the reigns in 1947, young Hubert de Montille was driven by a passion and a pursuit of quality. He strategically acquired parcels to add to the domaine’s holdings, inspired by the notion of terroir and the idea that his wines should be made to age in order to express their true character. Sadly, Hubert passed away in November 2014 at the age of 84, but his legacy is safe in the capable ands of his son Etienne and daughter Alix who have been gradually incorporated into the day to day running of the estate over the last thirty years.

Stylistically, the de Montilles are purists and tend to treat each vintage uniquely. The wines are known for their incredible finesse and the complexity that develops with maturity, as they show a distinguished, fine and elegant expression.

94+ points Vinous: “Bright, pale straw-yellow. Knockout high-pitched aromas and flavors of white peach, lavender, fleur de sel and mint. Sweet, tactile and superconcentrated, boasting superb floral lift and inner-mouth perfume. Finishes adamantly dry, tight and extremely long, with outstanding energy and verve. I would not be surprised if this wine merited an even higher rating seven or eight years down the road.”

(90-93) points Burghound: “Once again the nose is quite reduced and impossible to assess. In the same fashion as the Perrières there is a lovely sense of tension and complexity to the slightly denser and more powerful flavors that exude a note of green apple on the dry but not really austere finale. This too should benefit from a few years of cellar time to better harmonize but it should be worth the wait.”

(92-94) points Burghound: “An ultra-pure and fresh nose of green apple, spiced pear and citrus blossom gracefully slides into overtly stony and powerful broad-shouldered flavors that despite their significant size and weight, are crystalline in their transparency on the superbly long and well-balanced finale. This is most impressive and very clearly built-to-age so note well that this is definitely going to require some patience.”

de Montille Meursault Perrieres 2012
Pack Size: OCB (6)
12 bottles available
$110 per bottle

(90-92) points Burghound: “Here too strong sulfur and reduction render the nose impossible to assess. As one would reasonably expect this is intensely mineral-driven with an excellent sense of energy and tension to the saline-inflected flavors that display only moderate depth on the otherwise wonderfully long and well-balanced finish. My range offers the benefit of the doubt that more depth will develop with age.”

de Montille Meursault Perrieres 2013
Pack Size: OCB (12)
12 bottles available
$95 per bottle

(90-92) points Burghound: “Firm reduction suppresses the fruit. The palate feel of the racy and highly energetic flavors brim with an almost pungent minerality as well as really lovely complexity on the saline-inflected finish. This is not especially dense and thus it should benefit from a few years of bottle age to flesh out.”

de Montille Puligny Montrachet Les Caillerets 2011
Pack Size: OCB (12)
12 bottles available
$110 per bottle

(91-94) points Burghound: “A beautifully and highly expressive nose of acacia blossom, cool pear and mineral reduction scents precede exceptionally well-delineated, intense and energetic flavors that possess an abundance of minerality on the impeccably balanced finish. This is quite dry but not really austere and should offer up to a decade of cellar potential. In sum, this is terrific.”

de Montille Puligny Montrachet Les Caillerets 2013
Pack Size: OCB (6)
24 bottles available
$125 per bottle

(91-93) points Burghound: “Here there is no such reduction as the expressive nose is composed of acacia blossom, pear and lemon zest. As with all of the whites in the de Montille stable there is an intense minerality to the citrusy medium-bodied flavors that possess the best concentration in the range, all wrapped in a well-balanced, complex and strikingly persistent finish. Patience will of course be required but this should be excellent in time.”
