RENE ROSTAING COTE ROTIE CUVEE AMPODIUM 2013

Offered JUNE 15th, 2017

Rene Rostaing is one of Cote Rotie’s finest classical producers. His first vintage 1971 was made from a tiny parcel of vines in the Cote Blonde vineyard, but it was not until the mid-1980s that his wines were more widely discovered. His original plot of vines in Cote Blonde came from his grandfather (also a respected winemaker), and in 1977 he was able to add another small quarter hectare of vines in the La Landonne vineyard and produce his first bottling that vintage.

His wife, Christiane also comes from a winegrowing family – her father Albert Dervieux was the President of the Cote Rotie growers syndicate for over thirty years of his long career, and is also considered one of the finest producers in the region during the post-war years. As well, her uncle was the famous Marius Gentaz of Domaine Gentaz-Dervieux, the finest of all producers in this region during the course of his long and illustrious career. Both of these gentlemen, upon their retirements, handed over the reins of their parcels to Rostaing, and today he has some of the largest holdings of old vines in several of the very finest vineyards in Cote Rotie.

93 points View From the Cellar: “The 2013 Ampodium bottling from René Rostaing, which readers will recall is his blended cuvée, is an absolutely classic bottle of young Côte-Rôtie. The bouquet is bright, precise and very transparent, offering up a marvelous blend of raspberries, pepper, spiced meats, stony soil tones, woodsmoke, a nice touch of stems and a topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and gorgeously soil-driven, but coupled to a very sappy core of red fruit, impeccable focus and balance, ripe, moderate tannins and great length and grip on the nascently complex and utterly seamless balance. This is utterly superb and will not need too many years in the cellar to start to drink with generosity.”
