MICHEL NIELLON

Offered NOV 29th, 2017

Michel Niellon Batard Montrachet 2015
6 bottles available
$495 per bottle

93 points Burghound: “A very ripe but not surmature mix of pear liqueur, spice, petrol and matchstick aromas leads to super-rich, round and palate drenching flavors that are dense to the point of possessing a borderline creamy mouth feel, indeed it is almost thick. This isn’t quite as complex as the Chevalier but as is usually the case it is more powerful and perhaps even a bit longer as well. I would make the same observation here that this isn’t a typical Niellon Bâtard but if I can find it I will buy it anyway.”

Michel Niellon Chassagne Montrachet 2014
36 bottles available
$55 per bottle

90+ points View From the Cellar: “I have been a long-time fan of the Chassagne villages bottling from Domaine Niellon, as I have been fortunate to drink this wine with some regularly since the vintages of the late 1980s. The 2014 is going to be another lovely wine, wafting from the glass in a blend of apple, a touch of pineapple, a fine base of soil tones, spring flowers and a deft framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and vibrant, with a fine core, lovely focus and balance and a long, zesty finish.”

Michel Niellon Chassagne Montrachet Champs Gain 2014
6 bottles available
$70 per bottle

91+ points View From the Cellar: “The 2014 Champgains is another strong bottle in the making, with a bit more mid-palate plushness than the villages. The bouquet delivers a fine, youthful mix of pear, apple, deep soil tones, orange peel, vanillin oak, a touch of smokiness and a gently herbal topnote that I often find in this cuvée. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and classy, with a good core, fine focus and balance and a long, vibrant and still quite primary finish. This is approachable already, but I would be inclined to give it a couple of years in the cellar to develop further.”

Michel Niellon Chassagne Montrachet Chenevottes 2013
12 bottles available
$75 per bottle

92+ points View From the Cellar: “My first vintage of Domaine Niellon’s Chenevottes is really quite lovely and I do wish I had had a chance to try this cuvée in earlier vintages, as I have been visiting the estate for many, many years now. The 2013 is excellent, jumping from the glass in a classic mélange of apple, pear, white flowers, a touch of butter, a lovely base of chalky soil tones and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and succulent on the attack, with a fine core and a very nice sense of reserve on the backend, which is racy, nascently complex and very classy.”

Michel Niellon Chassagne Montrachet Chenevottes 2014
10 bottles available
$70 per bottle

(90-92) points Vinous: “Bright, green-tinged pale yellow. Reticent aromas of lime, kiwi, white pepper and spicy oak show a medicinal reserve today. Tactile, dusty and very dry; shows excellent framing acidity and energy but seems less fruity than usual for this cuvée. Dense and seamless in the middle, then quite dry and a bit youthfully austere on the long back end.”

Michel Niellon Chassagne Montrachet Clos de la Maltroie 2013
36 bottles available
$75 per bottle

93 points View From the Cellar: “The Clos de la Maltroie was the last wine to finish up its malo in the cellars this year, and consequently, this was the most recently bottled. Nevertheless, the wine was really showing well at the time of my visit, delivering a fine aromatic constellation of lime, apple, complex minerality, a touch of smokiness and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and nascently complex, with a rock solid core, bright acids and a very long, elegant and classic finish. This is really lovely juice this year.”

Michel Niellon Chassagne Montrachet Clos St. Jean 2014
20 bottles available
$70 per bottle

93 points View From the Cellar: “The vineyard of Clos St. Jean has quite a bit of clay in it and I generally cherish the red wines from this terroir more than I do the white wines. However, the 2014 from Michel Coutoux is really special and was absolutely singing at the time of my visit. The bouquet jumps from the glass in a fine blend of apple, tangerine, superb minerality, citrus blossoms, vanillin oak and a topnote of orange zest. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, vibrant and beautifully balanced, with a fine core, excellent focus and most impressive backend energy on the pure and very long finish. Chapeau!”

Michel Niellon Chassagne Montrachet Les Chaumees Clos de la Truffiere 2013
21 bottles available
$75 per bottle

94+ points View From the Cellar: “The 2013 Clos de la Truffière is flat out stunning at Domaine Niellon, as these old vines (which Monsieur Coutoux notes are “completely healthy and very different than the Bâtard”) have really produced a stunning young wine in this vintage. The stellar nose wafts from the glass in a fine blend of apple, pear, lime blossoms, a very complex base of chalky soil tones, incipient notes of butter and a fine base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very suave on the attack, with a great core, bright acids and outstanding length and grip on the perfectly balanced finish. This is one of the finest recent vintages of the Clos de la Truffière that I have tasted.”
