JOSEPH ROTY (2009 - 2015)

Offered MAY 20th, 2018

Roty’s only premier cru is Fontenys, which is contiguous to the north of Ruchottes Chambertin, its lower edge also sharing a boundary with Mazis Chambertin – the vines are so old that they were planted prior to record-keeping that began in the 1870s.  It is always a powerful rendition of Gevrey Chambertin that requires some time in the cellar, but with age is one of the great wines of the village.

The Mazis is a wine of uncommon depth, power and balance, with the potential for fifty years of evolution in the bottle in a great vintage.  It is always the most sauvage of the Roty grand crus – very distinctive, full, intense, perfumed and harmonious.

2014: 2 bottles available, $335 per bottle, 96+ points View From the Cellar

2011: 4 bottles available, $375 per bottle, 96 points View From the Cellar

The Charmes Chambertin Tres Vieilles Vignes is even more powerful, with the vineyard’s 136 year-old vines producing deep, dark Pinot Noir.  Along with all the power comes a wine of stunning perfume, focus and the balance to ensure that patiently waiting out this big wine in the cellar will be rewarded.

Perhaps the top of all the Roty grand crus is the supernal, exotic Griottes Chambertin.  This tiny jewel of a vineyard may be the best terroir in Gevrey, and no one makes a better wine here.  This is a wine of stunning purity and perfume (kirsch-like candied black cherries, smoked and grilled meats, minerals, exotic spices, and floral tones) matched to depth, power and great length on the palate.
