JACQUES SELOSSE

Offered APR 17th, 2017

Anselme Selosse has been one of the major drivers of important changes that have been developing in Champagne over the last two decades, with the pursuit of better and more sustainable viticulture, lower yields and less interventionist winemaking in the cellar, all improvements that can be traced back to his arrival at his family’s domaine in 1980. Prior to returning to the family Champagne house, he had trained in Burgundy at Leflaive and Coche-Dury before taking over the family property. According to Peter Liem:

“No champagne grower is as renowned or as influential as Anselme Selosse. Whether directly or indirectly, he has inspired an entire generation of young winegrowers in the region, and among consumers, his champagnes have become some of the most sought-after wines in the world…Although his style is a rich one, this concentration results from his intense dedication to viticulture, and the wines are not rich simply for the sake of being large. They are capable of an elegance and finesse that rivals anything to be found in Champagne, and at their best, their complexity of flavor is unmatched. It’s rare to find a champagne, or indeed, a wine of any kind, as profound in its expression and as multi-voiced in its complexity as Selosse’s are.”

Jacques Selosse Blanc de Blancs Version Originale NV
6 bottles available, $195 per bottle

94 points Vinous: “The NV V.O. (Version Originale) is a total knock-out. A dazzling wine of dramatic, sweeping intensity, the V.O. hits the palate with stunning depth and a captivating interplay of ripeness and freshness. Because of the inherent richness of 2009, Selosse bottled this release with no dosage, a decision that has paid off very nicely. A host of dried pear, hazelnut, spice, lemon peel and herbs melds into the explosive, vibrant finish. This release is a blend of the 2009, 2008 and 2007 vintages. Disgorged November 2015 with no dosage.”

Jacques Selosse Rose NV
24 bottles available, $230 per bottle

93 points Vinous: “Selosse’s NV Brut Rosé is quite floral and lifted, with kirsch, rose petal, mint and hard candy notes that blossom in the glass. This is one of the more eccentric, intensely floral versions of the Selosse’s Rosé I can remember tasting. This bottle was disgorged on February 12, 2014. Dosage is 2.6 grams per liter.”

Jacques Selosse Blanc de Blancs Substance NV
18 bottles available, $290 per bottle

94+ points View From the Cellar: “I enjoyed a glass of this with my cheese course at Les Avizés (courtesy of my neighbors’ generosity) the night before our tasting with Monsieur Selosse. The wine offers up a deep and still quite youthful nose of fresh apricot, pear, beautifully complex, limestone minerality, smoke, gentle nuttiness, a touch of lemon peel and a faint glimmer of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and superbly complex, with a fine core, frothy mousse and outstanding focus and grip on the very long and pure finish. A beautiful wine.”

Jacques Selosse Lieux Dits Assortment Case OWC (6)
1 case available, $2,490 per case

Includes one bottle each of: Le Bout du Clos, Sous le Mont, Les Carelles, Cote Faron, Les Chantereines and Chemin de Chalons

Jacques Selosse Blanc de Noirs Le Bout du Clos NV
6 bottles available, $295 per bottle

97 points View From the Cellar: “While the lieu à dit bottling from Ambonnay, the Le Bout du Clos is ostensibly a pinot noir cuvée, the parcel used by Monsieur Selosse actually includes ten percent chardonnay as well, which was vinified together with the pinot noir to produce this stunning wine. The brilliantly complex bouquet soars from the glass in a blend of apple, white peach, a touch of tangerine, kaleidoscopic minerality, a touch of warm bread, and floral tones redolent of peonies. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and utterly refined, with a great core, magical complexity, elegant mousse and a very, very long and stunning finish. This is one of the greatest wines I have ever had the pleasure to taste from Anselme Selosse!”

Jacques Selosse Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut Sous le Mont NV
18 bottles available, $315 per bottle

98 points View From the Cellar: “The base wine on this beauty is the superb 2002 vintage, and the wine is absolutely brilliant. The deep, pure and utterly classic nose soars from the glass in a smoky blaze of white peach, gentle tangerine, warm biscuits, chalky minerality, discreet white flowers and the aforementioned smokiness in abundance. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and still strikingly young, with a great core, elegant mousse, and outstanding cut and grip on the very, very long, mineral bath of a finish. There is a vibrancy to the expression of terroir here that is otherworldly! This wine is certainly approachable today (I sincerely doubt I spit it on this morning), but it is still relatively primary in profile and five or six more years in the cellar are really going to work their magic on this utterly profound young wine.”

Jacques Selosse Blanc de Blancs Les Carelles NV
18 bottles available, $325 per bottle

97 points View From the Cellar: “The brighter, more focused side of Chardonnay screams out of the glass in the NV (2008) Le Mesnil sur Oger Les Carelles. Here the flavors are distinctly high-toned, with plenty of citrus peel, white pepper, smoke and slate. Vivid and finely sculpted throughout, with a slightly reductive quality, the Mesnil remains tightly wound and in need of time in bottle. There is an implosive energy that is just waiting to emerge fully. When it does, the Mesnil will be utterly captivating. Actually, it already is.”

Jacques Selosse Blanc de Blancs Millesime 1.5L 1998
1 magnum available, $1,490 per magnum

Jacques Selosse Blanc de Blancs Millesime 1999
3 bottles available, $675 per bottle

94 points View From the Cellar: “The 1999 Blanc de Blancs from Anselme Selosse is drinking at its apogee at age seventeen, but still has plenty of life in it. The bouquet offers up a mature and impressively complex blend of baked apple, peach, sweet almonds, a lovely base of chalky minerality, brioche, a touch of orange peel and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and complex, with a lovey core, pinpoint bubbles and very good length and grip on the vibrant and classy finish.”

Jacques Selosse Blanc de Blancs Millesime 1.5L 2002
3 magnums available, $1,650 per magnum

97 points Vinous: “A total turn on, the 2002 Extra-Brut Grand Cru Millesime is one of the great wines of this vintage. Exotic, ripe and totally flashy, the 2002 bursts from the glass with massive layers of fruit. Honey, spices, tangerine, nectarine, flowers and mint all come to life in this huge, vivid Champagne. Waves of rich, tropical infused fruit supported by veins of saline minerality flow through to the voluptuous, huge finish. This is a stunning wine from Anselme Selosse. Ideally, the 2002 needs a few years for some of the baby fat to drop off, but it is pretty fabulous today. The overt richness bears more than a passing resemblance to Montrachet, from the Chassagne side.”

Jacques Selosse Blanc de Blancs Millesime 2003
6 bottles available, $435 per bottle

Jacques Selosse Blanc de Blancs Millesime 2005
8 bottles available, $450 per bottle

97 points Vinous: “A wine of cool sophistication and finesse, the 2005 Millesime is simply superb today and more expressive than it was when I last tasted it, about a year ago. An exotic mélange of citrus, lemon confit and floral notes infuses the 2005, a rich, deep Champagne loaded with class and personality. Even with all of its intensity, the 2005 remains light on its feet and gracious to the core. The Millesime is a blend of fruit from the Chantereines Les Maladries du Midi lieu-dits, both in Avize.”
