BACHELET GEVREY CHAMBERTIN CORBEAUX VV (2009 - 2013)

Offered MAY 5th, 2017

Denis Bachelet originally hails from Belgium, but became a vigneron in 1981 after the passing of his grandfather in Gevrey Chambertin. Vines were inherited by Denis’s father from his parents, and soon after he made his first vintage in his late teens, his wines developed a cult following.

The entire domaine is less than four hectares, but consists of very old-vine parcels, including Charmes Chambertin, Gevrey Chambertin Les Corbeaux, Gevrey Chambertin and Cotes de Nuits Villages. Denis’ ability for making pure, graceful wines is entirely natural, and finesse shows in everything he makes. Great attention is paid to yields in the vineyard, as well as a better selection of barrels in the cellar.

His premier cru Les Corbeaux comes from a 90+ year-old plot of vines adjacent to Mazis Chambertin that give a powerful, deep and complex wine with impressive concentration – a close rival to his magical Charmes Chambertin, and most definitely the insider’s pick in the portfolio.

Bachelet Gevrey Chambertin Corbeaux VV 2009
6 bottles available, $150 per bottle

93+ points View From the Cellar: “Corbeaux, right next to Mazis-Chambertin, is one of the coolest microclimates in Gevrey, and in 2009, this was not necessarily a bad thing. Denis Bachelet observed that “the cooler soils in Corbeaux always produce more masculine wines” in comparison to other top premier crus in the village. The 2009 Corbeaux is really a stunning wine in the making, as it offers up scents of black cherries, cassis, dark berries, grilled meats, black minerality and a touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite powerfully built, with a rock solid core of fruit, firm, but ripe and very even tannins, good acids and great length and grip on the focused and perfectly balanced finish. This will take a good decade to really blossom, but it will be a great bottle at its apogee and should prove to be particularly long-lived for a 2009.”

Bachelet Gevrey Chambertin Corbeaux VV 2010
6 bottles available, $150 per bottle

94 points View From the Cellar: “The 2010 les Corbeaux is a brilliant wine in the making, as it delivers a very pure and strikingly beautiful bouquet of black cherries, cassis, grilled meat, espresso, bitter chocolate, stunningly complex minerality, new wood and a lovely floral topnote redolent of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and extremely sappy at the core, with glorious transparency, ripe tannins and superb length and grip on the laser-like and utterly soil-driven finish. Just a brilliant bottle of Corbeaux, from one of Gevrey’s greatest and most underrated premier cru vineayrds.”

Bachelet Gevrey Chambertin Corbeaux VV 2011
6 bottles available, $115 per bottle

93+ points View From the Cellar: ” The 2011 les Corbeaux is another exceptional wine in the making, with a very pure and minerally profile wrapped up behind its youthful front. The deep and properly reserved nose wafts from the glass in a refined blend of cassis, black cherries, espresso, woodsmoke, black minerality and a stylish base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and primary, with a rock solid core of fruit, great transparency, fine-grained tannins and outstanding length and grip on the very minerally finish. A beautiful wine in the making.”

Bachelet Gevrey Chambertin Corbeaux VV 2013
12 bottles available, $115 per bottle

94 points View From the Cellar: “We are starting to get close to the hundredth birthday of these fine old vines in Corbeaux, as the Bachelet family’s parcel here was planted in 1920. The nose on the 2013 version is nicely reserved, delivering a refined constellation of dark berries, cassis, coffee bean, grilled meats, dark soil tones, woodsmoke and a discreet framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and still quite primary in profile, with a rock solid core of fruit, outstanding soil inflection, ripe, firm tannins and great focus and balance on the very, very long, youthful and classic finish. Quite 1993-like in profile.”
